Abstract
During WW1, starting from the autumn of 1914, the Red Cross Association operated an auxiliary field hospital in Magyarkanizsa, where soldiers wounded or fallen ill on the battlefield were treated. The whole community of the city took its share in aiding the hospital and attending to the wounded with donations and volunteering. The hospital operated until the end of the war. Despite attentive care, many of the wounded/ill perished: the first of the heroic dead was Vencel Kreuczer, a private with Moravian nationality, who died on October 20, 1914. He and his late comrades –71 persons in total –were laid to rest in the military parcel which was formed in the cemetery of the Roman Catholic Church in Magyarkanizsa. The parcel for the heroic dead was restored in 2003 with the professional help and support of the local government and the Institute and Museum of Military History in Budapest.
