Abstract

The First World War has changed almost all aspects of the previous world, and this is true the situation and social position of women too. As a result of the war economy, besides the work of prisoners of war, women also appeared in formerly solely men’s jobs. Their massive appearance is the most spectacular example of economic "mobilization". In Budapest the first female drivers, tram conductresses, lamplighters, waiters, firefighters, etc. already appeared in the period of the WWI.Beyond that, the ticket system and the supplies also demanded a lot of ingenuity and survival practice from women. Separate war-cookbooks appeared for housewives, furthermore cooking courses started and more attention was paid to earlier marginalized vegetarian 419movements. Women are well-versed in the under-war charity actions and were the leaders and operators of a various collecting initiatives both in the capital and in the countryside. The political system demanded from the woman, above all, the persuasion, persistence and perseverance of the goals ofthe war. The propaganda-promoted womanhood has become a committed ’home-girl’ who not only plays a role in social gatherings, but if she can, beyond her possibilites, donates for war purposes, underwrite war-loan obligations and also takes part in the hospital for wounded. In addition, she is low-keyed: pipes down her clothing needs and satisfied with the Austrian, German, especially with Hungarian commodities of the clothing market, and in the kitchen, as far as she can, saves and shrinks. Of course, the social position of women fundamentally determined how they lived through the struggles: the lifestyle of the aristocracy’s ladies was only slightly changed, the middle-class women have been basically suffered from the expensiveness and the rationing, whilereplacing their husbands women in the peasant farms made particularly hard physical work.Following the fallen soldiers, the biggest perpetrators of the Great War were women definitely. At the end of the mass killing, there was hardly anyone who would not mourn a husband, father, brother, or boy. They could hardly be compensated with some awards for their war efforts, or with decorative medals for their volunteer work. The former Prime Minister, István Tisza in his speech at the Christmas of 1917, also acknowledged the war efforts of the country's women's, when he praised the exemplary attitude of the "heroines of the Home". Women's war efforts were not fruitless: the strict subordination and rigid social structures have been resolved –as a result of the war. By the fact that the members of the weaker sex have shown so much strength, the War has not only boosted and stimulated the Hungarian women's movements and the fights for general suffrages too, but it also shaped radically the public thinking. So the First World War also contributed to creation the Idea of a Modern Woman.
