Abstract
Since 1989, the commemoration of the 1956 revolution can be celebrated freely. 23rd October has become a state holiday. This study analyses the course of the celebration, the events, the participants, the influence of current politics on the celebration and the commemoration, and the symbols of the celebration in the process of formation. The author used participant observation as her basic method. She observed the events of the holiday which ranged from the protocol to the more spontaneous: in the morning, hoisting of a flag in front of a small audience, the ceremonial general assembly in the theatre, inaugurating a statue, wreathlaying and procession with candles in the evening. The celebration appeared also in the daily press, there were reports about the preparations and the celebration and some reports by eye-witnesses published and, of course, there were some hints about how the discontent with the change of political regime penetrated the celebratory voices. One can observe the effort to develop a system of symbols for 1956. The celebration was represented by a statue inaugurated in 1997, a poem on the invitation card issued by the town and in the theatre, by the national flag with a hole in the middle.
