Abstract
The present study analyses the first anniversary of one of the historical commemorations of Hungarians: 15th March. On the one hand, the study examines what 15th March meant for the people during the war of independence. On the other hand, it tries to give a summary of the organization of the commemorations in 1849 and the symbols pervading and structuring them. The analysis relies mostly on archival sources (mainly on official papers of the time and some printed publications of commemorative speeches). During the examination of the sources it became evident that, as early as 1848/49, 15th March, 1848 was considered to be the symbol of the war of independence. That's why the first anniversary had a special significance. The annual celebration of 15th March was handed down to posterity by the adherents of the war of independence.
