Abstract
The present study uses the Akhmim fragments and the Ethiopian version of Peter's apocalypse which was written 125-150 A.D. and came down to us in fragments, translations and revisions. On the basis of this material, the study examines how the first Christian other-worldly apocalypse - incorporating pagan mythological, Orphic-Pythagoric and Jewish apocalyptic traditions beyond the Hebrew Bible - presents the events of the hereafter in visions and prophecies with the intention of warning the contemporaries. The examined versions of Peter's apocalypse provide revealed knowledge about the eternal blessed or damned state after the last events and judgement closing human and historical time. This knowledge cannot be obtained through the traditional ways of human cognition. The study examines how the texts present the events of eternity with the accessories of apocalypse using its pictorial language.
