The spiritual character of King St. Steven was inspired by a parusian expectation of the thousandth year which was longing to be in the heavenly Jerusalem. People were waiting the beginning of the Last Judgement, the arrival of the Antichrist. This spirituality was living in the reformed cloister of Cluny. King St. Steven had direct contact to Cluny. The celebration of All Souls' Day is rooted also in Cluny. Depicting of the Las Judgement had a central role in the iconography of the Romanic and has also many examples in Hungary. This spirituality, the Christ figure and the vision of the Last Judgement accurs also on objects connected to the saint king (Holy Crown, coronation cope, etc.). Many churches were dedicated to the protection of Archangel Michael, angel of the Last Judgement. Veneration of the cross occupied an important place in the spirituality of the king. The cross accurs also on the Holy Crown of Hungary. The coronation of St. Steven was held consciously on the octave of Christmass, on 1st of January 1001 when the Last Judgement was expected.
