Abstract

On the 300th anniversary of Baja's declaration as a town (1996) the organisers suggested preparing the town's specific dish, the fish soup in 300 pots on a public celebration on the main square. The suggestion met with a warm response and ever since, the fish soup festival is organized every year - today, with thousands of participants. On the second Saturday evening of July, the main square and the neighbouring streets serve as the site of cooking and entertaining programmes. The families participating in the celebration invite their guests, and there are several tourists and local visitors as well. Participation in the festival became a symbolic means of expressing unity and Baja identity. The study presents the structure of space and time and the participants of the festival.
