Abstract

The study interprets pilgrimage as a ritual performance. During this symbolic event pilgrims, like performers in a defined role, behave in accordance with certain rules. The boundary between stage and auditorium is vague; the group of performers and the audience is inseparable, as if they all were performers of a sacred theatre, theatrum sacrum. The study presents pilgrimage as a cultural performance through the example of Mariaradna (now Arad County, Romania). From this view, identifying oneself with the sufferings of Christ and Mary is of primary importance. Pilgrims obtain absolution from sins by experiencing this, and they return to the everyday world purified and strengthened. We can conclude that pilgrimage is an event which is able to dissolve the stress of the profane world by creating an encounter with the sacred. In the course of the celebration, spiritual tension culminates in a dramatic outburst. This state of full value eases the problems seemed to be impossible to solve in our stressful everyday life.
