The medieval Kunszentmárton destroyed during the Turkish occupation was resettled in 1719 from Jászapáti and other Jazygian settlements. The settlers were characterised by their strong Catholic faith and affectionate veneration to Virgin Mary. Due to this there are remarkably numerous images of Blessed Mary in the churches and chapels of Kunszentmáron, even on the main square of the town. In 1767 Saturday afternoons were dedicated to the veneration of the Virgin Mary. People of Kunszentmárton regulary went on pilgrimages to Máriaradna, even to Máriacell, Austria already from the first half of the 18th century. The mementoes of these trips are the xyolography-like paperpictures, one of which depicts the Blessed Virgin of Radna, the other is about the Blessed Mary of Cell with the little Jesus. With gilded crown on their heads they are dressed in silk embroidered with gold and pearls. The picture from Radna probably cherishes the memory of István Radies' miraculous recovery in 1724, or it could be a votive picture offered after the plague of 1739. The picture from Cell may also have been brought home by pilgrims. Their origin is uncertain, but they were surely brought into the church built in 1784 from their original places. In 1889 generous women had the figures of Our Lady mended as it had grown frayed during the years, and to record this event they placed a document behind the pictures. After the extension of the church in 1910 the pictures were put to their final places in the tabernacle-niche of the Saint Francis and Saint Antonio altars. These two reproductions of the miraculous pictures are the oldest and most valuable relics of the Roman Catholic believers' veneration to Blessed Virgin Mary in Kunszentmárton.
