Since 1981 the names found in severalthousand Hungarian folktales have been published in registers. Also the register of names appearing in anthologies of ballads, ditties and archaic folk prayers has been compiled. Within this material the names referring to Virgin Mary has been studied. Blessed Mary is mentioned in almost 30 tales. This proves to be significant, as there is only one known international folktale type - Our Lady's Child (AaTh 710) - where the name of Blessed Mary is expected to appear. This effect of the religious-liturgical designations of Blessed Mary is clearly perciptible also on folktales. In all the other genres this name is only rarely mentioned. More frequentis itin the so called archaic folkprayers (lay prayers), which have a long list of names referring to Virgin Mary. This indicates that most ofsuch prayers appeal to Blessed Mary. These names are originated from a rich liturgical backgrunkd. In order to draw further conclusions the register of names should be studied also in folksongs, hymns and folk legends. Obviously the pictures of Virgin Mary had an influence as well on this tradition. On he basis of a certain source (Elek Jordánszky's review of the miraculous pictures of Virgin Mary in Hungary, 1830) we know that the contracion of the name of Blessed Mary or other referring texts are sometimes visible on pictures. This could also influence oral tradition. In order to present this in details we should survey devotional pictures and private images of Blessed Mary from this point of view. This question is worth investigating.
