Since 1975 a multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary research projekt is in progress on the major shrines of the Catholic Church. The first account of this project can be found in „П Senso delCammino. I Pellegrinaggi Mariani. Un' Analisi Socio-Culturale sui Pellegrinaggi a Lourdes, Fatima, Loreto, Our Lady of the Snows." by P. Giuriati and G. Lanzi Arzenton, C.R.S.R., Padova 1992. Aside from the above mentioned shrines, research has been carried out on pilgrimages to Guadalupe (Mexico), St. Leopold Mandic' in Padua (Italy), Denver and Jasna Gora in Czestochowa (Poland). The research onpilgrimage was carried outin the theoretical-practical framework of social communication of a sacred message presented to the devout and metabolized by them, thatis to say, assimilated to various degrees. The hypothesis is that coming to a shrine constitutes a religious momentinscribed in the globality of the life of the visitors and has the function of recharging him existentially in order to give meaning and substance to daily routin: through an experience with the „radically other" the pilgrim can find, or rediscover, or reinforce his acces and communion with it.
