Abstract
The „picture", in this case, is a specific natural object: the Karancs Mountain and its historical heritage. The mountain encouraged the people to create an explanation for its existence in every historical era, thus, the cult of the place was developed. In the local epic tradition Saint Ladislas, the Tatar Invasion, Béla IV and Saint Margarite from the Árpád House are connected to it and to the villages of the region. Lajos Varga wrote a poem about the history of the Saint Margarite Chapel standing on top of the mountain. Next to the chapel, hermits lived from the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century. In the end of the 1920s, a man from the village Bocsárlapujtő, Pál Boroznaki introduced the folk ritual connected to the death, burial and ascension of Virgin Mary. As a result of this, the mountain became a place of pilgrimage and the sacred mountain of the region.
