Abstract
It was the mostly Roman Catholic popular culture of the underdeveloped Palócföld in Northern Hungary that maintained the traditional cult of images the most vividly. The spatial centre of Catholic peasants' religious experience is the church, which has been considered to be the earthly site of heavenly reality according to traditions of many centuries, and, in case of the Palócs, it is more or less so even today. In traditional culture, the church and its set of objects are not only works of architecture and art and the place of liturgy, but the dwelling of the Deity and the patron saints - a sacred area. Adjusting to trends of cult of the time, these works are often donated by peasants as votive offerings, besides foundations by noblemen and patrons. Church interiors usually show the popularity of mystical, transcendental depictions. It is important for the maintenance of the cult that the image should be placed within reach. In some places, the cult of an unusual saint was enhanced by their side or back position. The delicate signs of wear on the images are the permanent marks of religious contact. The study discusses the cultic characteristics of procession crucifixes, portable statues of Mary and statues of the resurrected Christ, the latter ones compared to craftworks and serial products. According to traditional views, the sacred objects depicting saints possess a kind of personal existence. The image of a saint and the saint depicted is somehow combined. In this way, the images can evoke the direct experience of divine presence for village people. Eventually, Catholic Palócs' attitude to sacred objects can only be understood if you consider their whole system of culture and mentality.
