Abstract
Churches and chapels have been builtin the parishes of the Deanery of Gyula (Diocese of Szeged-Csanád) in the Békés County since the Baroque era. The earliest of these was the baroque Chapel of the Holy Trinity builtin Gyula in 1715. The modem small church of Szabadkígyós, builtin 2000, is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. The architectural solutions, the division of the inner space, the furniture, altar pieces, statues, bells and the organ all inspire the beholder by their beauty and musical harmony to give praise to God.. Every church builtin the center of a village or city dominatesits surroundings, and is a prominent landmark of the city scape. The altar pieces and statues, often created by renowned artists (Dorffmaister, Békés; and Hubert Maurer, Gyula) represent the title, patron and patroness of the church. Statues of Saint Anthony are always placed within reach in every church, asthe congregation touches these statues frequently (Békéscsaba, Gyula). The monumental seccos of László Patay in Gyula and Békéscsaba (the Jamina district) have an elemental effect on the beholder. The perfectly tuned bells, the valuable organs (Mooser, Rieger, Angster) provides sacred music for the devotions. Colorful stained glass windows and decorative fleuron all service to emphasize the sanctity of the church. Bonfires, mortaring and Greek fire all enhanced the splendor the festivities of the resurrection and Corpus Christi processions (Békés, Gyula, Békéscsaba).
