Abstract

Afterthe tongue, the hands are ourmost communicativebody parts. Our hands are not only for feeling by touching, but also for expressing ourinnermostfeelings and thoughts through motions and gestures, and representthings that we simply cannot express in words. How did people communicate with their hands in the biblical era? As a work of literature created in the antiquity, the Bible recorded the customs of an era long since past. Our gestures also have a mother tongue. In this paper I have gathered data from biblical descriptions pertaining to this special language. I discuss the symbolic meaning of touching, the imposition of hands and the gesture of prayer in the antiquity, as well as left-handedness and the symbolic meaning of using the right hand and the left hand.
