Abstract

Year 2012 is the Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations in the EU. The objective of the European Union is to provide the elderly with such an environment, in which they will not become dependent on others; therefore the European Union supports every effort made by member states. But how does this effort appear in Hungary in the world of sports? What possibilities and especially what rights do the older generations have to make use of the approach of relaxation and the protection of health? In order to answer all these questions, it is necessary to clarify the following in a separate part of this paper: who are the elderly; what does sport and recreational activity mean; and who are senior sportsmen? In this paper, based on these and through the examination of national and international laws, I intend to answer the question whether the elderly have equal opportunities in the field of sports and if so, to what extent.
