Abstract

Talking about the literary life of the so-called Palaeologus Renaissance, one might state that both the scholarly and the lay audience took an interest in rhetoric and the classical authors. Therefore, the editions and the collections are based on the combination of these interests, which means that the scribes punctuated the classical texts relying on the rules of rhetoric. To understand this typically Byzantine way of punctuation, it is crucial to gain insight into the methods of punctuation in the classical and the early Byzantine period as well as the grammatical literature in this field. It is of great importance as even though there is no continuity between the classical practice and that of the Byzantine scribes, the effect of the antique methods manifests itself in the texts of the 14th century. In my paper, I wish to give an overview of the development of the Greek punctuation marks. Then, I would like to provide examples for the uses of these marks in the 14th century from a collection of quotations, namely the Florilegium Vindobonense, which is dated to the early 1300s.
