Abstract
In my article, I would like to present the ten major large agricultural holdings in Somogy county in the Drava region. The background of my work is provided by the historical statistical data recorded before the war (property descriptions, farm directories, etc.), supplementing other, e.g. with archival, museum and press resources. I present the ownership background of large agricultural holdings, the natural endowments, farm size and operational specialty of latifundiums. In the course of my research, I place great emphasis on the description of estates using innovative solutions, and on the domestic adaptation of Western techniques and technologies. I deal with the field crop production practices of the estates, the production of industrial and fodder crops, the meadow and pasture management, and the manor forestry. I will also look at what changes can be observed in the field of animal husbandry, which plays a major role in extensive farming, compared to previous conditions, highlighting cattle and sheep farming. I present the agricultural industry that developed in the area in the early 20th century. Including the most important players in the wood industry, spirits production, sugar production and milling industry. An important research criterion is the emergence of Western technology and the spread of various steam engines. Signs of post-phylloxera renewal in quality viticulture will be important. And finally, I wonder how the composition of the labor force in employment developed in the pre-war years.
