Abstract
Szegedinácz Péró (Serbian: Петар Јовановић/Petar Jovanović) was a Habsburg Serb military officer, a captain in Pomorišje. Pomorišje (meaning: ’the land near the river Maros’) was a histroical geographical region on the North banks of the river Maros. In this territory – between Szeged and Arad – lived (before 1750) a significant ethnic Serbian population. Szegedinácz Péró was the captain of the Serbian granichars (Serbian Grenz Infantry), who lived in Pécska (Pecica). Pero ’led’ the Serbian-Hungarian revolt in 1735. This study presents the history of the uprising with the Hungarian and Serbian historical background, the conspiracy and finally the events of retaliation. The revolt led by Pero, but the participants were mostly Hungarian peasants from Békés county (exactly the following settlements: Békésszentandrás, Békés, Doboz, etc.) and Bihar county (mostly from Sarkad). This rebellion was the most significat uprising by peasants under the rule of the Hungarian king, Charles III (1711–1740).
