Abstract
The few existing publications of glass from Sarmatian sites have mainly focused on materials from cemeteries, however, a significant amount of glass fragments can also be found in the settlement sites. The current study analyzes the glass vessel fragments found in Sarmatian settlement features. A total of 41 glass vessel fragments from 23 sites were collected, the majority of which (>90%) have not previously been published. Whole, intact vessels were not found and the vast majority of these pieces is represented by wall fragments. Based on their shape, only eight fragments (19.51%) could be classified with certainty. The proportion of colorless glass fragments were approximately equal to green glass fragments (46.34%, n=19 and 39.02%, n=16 respectively). The proportions of yellow and blue fragments from the collected material were lower (12.2%, n=5 and 2.4%, n=1 respectively). Almost one-third of the collected fragments exhibited extraordinary decorative patterning. Based on the shapes of the majority of fragments, these are probably pieces of drinking vessels or cups, including both the hemispherical and Kowalk-type glasses of the late 4th and early 5th century. The tall, curved-walled glass vessels suggest an even earlier date (about one century prior). In addition to the glass vessel fragments, specimens of bottles and perfume bottles were also found in the collected material, which rarely occurs in the Sarmatian environment. The archaeological sites close to the limes reveal a significant amount of glass vessels and other imported objects. These luxurious objects are considered less and less rare and the fact they are found at such a great distance from province Pannonia in such large quantities emphasizes the vibrancy of trading activities that existed at the time. Hopefully, this outstanding growth will be expanded shortly with more territorial collections, and thus, an even more comprehensive picture of the composition of these imports flowing to the Sarmatians can be formed, also providing a solution for the vessels of now unidentifiable shape and decoration.
