Abstract

The fertility rate in Europe and implicitly in Hungary has been lagging alarmingly behind the 2.1 children/woman rate that could assure the stable reproduction of the Population. The natural outcome of the process is population decrease and aging, Ihat is, the slow agony of society. There are two ways to address the problem: one is the encouragement of mass immigration, the process currently going on in Western Europe, while the other is the radical increase in fertility rate, which is what Hungary is striving to achieve. The first method is surely feasible, but risky in terms of outcome, while the second one is uncertain in terms of feasibility, but it is appropriate in terms of the outcome. Logically, there are two ways to increase fertility rate: everyone undertakes one child more or a smaller group of people undertakes a significantly higher number of children. I consider the second solution to be easier to realize in today’s modem, emancipated society, provided that the process is complemented with the implementation of a special institution, such as full-time Parenthood.
