Abstract

Demographic changes, like reduction, ageing, emigration or ethnical exchange are not unfamiliar to the Érmellék region in Romania. Demographic factors, such as the reduction in the number of children define the existence of schools. In the region under scrutiny, as a result of its structure, the school network is form edmostly from small schools, with a low number of students and a high dropout rate. The disadvantaged community in this region is formed of Hungarian and Hungarian Roma people. The school does not dissolve the differences resulting from the disadvantaged situation; how ever, it can be considered a vertical channel for social mobility. Their closure would make attending school more difficult for 20 percent of the children living in this region. A case study has been carried out in one of the school groups of the region, the results of which reaffirms the importance of the educational and social role of the school, irrespective of its level of equipment and educational efficiency.
