Abstract
The article gives an insight into what means to be Hungarian in Délvidék (Vojvodina) in the 20th century through three people's fate. Two of them were not born as Hungarian. Although Kornél Szenteleky came into the world as a Serb, later he became an outstanding figure of the Hungarian literary life in Yugoslavia. The vice parish priest of Martonos, Mihály Werner, was of German origin, but died a hero’s death as like a Hungarian in the cellar of the city hall. Dénes Szabó, Hungarian parish priest of Tóthfalu (Totovo Selo), was killed by partisan executioners for that very reason of his unconditional commitment to his nation and his followers.
