Abstract

In ancient history, self-promotion of leading figures played a huge role. Coinage, like today, was a means of finance but also a form of visual media. The depiction of living, leading Romans on the medium of coinage began in the mid-first century BC. An empire-wide numismatic programme for portraying Augustus and his successors was well established by the end of the Julio-Claudian dynasty in AD 69. In this paper, I demonstrate the importance of the images and legends on some Julio-Claudian coins by revealing what they contribute to our understanding of the self-representation of Julio-Claudian emperors.
