Abstract

If we don’t know much about the funerals of kings in the Middle-Ages, than why do we have so many memories about this theme? It’s not true, because archaeology and theology are helping us. Between mourning and the actual funeral it could pass a month. This is written down in the Hungarian Chronicle about the funeral of Charles I’s funeral. We know about two funeral types: a french-english (or the Anjou tradition), and a German-One (maybe arabic called in German: Mos Teutonicus). In Europe we see, that both these burial types use people when the kings have died, and that the rulers must be buried. This study is mostly about the Hungarian rulers, whose funeral memories were preserved in our sources. Not just Charles, but Matthias from the house of Hunyadi family’s burying is also interesting. The most interesting burial story is of Ladislaus II from the Jagiello family. His burial was not finished, because he died in the field in the battle of Varna, if our sources are true. But the Turkish and polish sources describe another story about Ladislaus. There is a chance that he survived the battle, or he was probably killed. The latest one of these studies, which is about Louis II of the Jagiello family whose funeral and death is the most mysterious case. But what exactly do we know about this theme? What are the sources saying? How have the people burry their kings? How much time is enough to grieve, and what memories there are about this theme? Crowns, Tunics, Rings etc.
