Abstract
Alexander Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine was born at Florence as the fourth son of Leopold II. on the 14th of August 1774, later king of Hungary and emperor of Austria. His palatinate begun in the troublesome years of the 1790–1791 diet, officially dated on November 15th. Until 1795 the young palatine was handled the policy of the Kingdom of Hungary on a very prosperous way. I tried my best to follow the footsteps of Elemér Mályusz and János Poór, who was both are influential historians of the era. In the beginning the palatine was the main supporter of the issues of the kingdom. In local cases he supported the Hungarian language, he surrounded himself with Hungarian counsellors and his big dream was to elevate the Kingdom of Hungary to be on par with the Austrian provinces. His beliefs was interfered by the mistrusting imperial court and by the Martinovics-conspiracy. After Ignác Martinovics plans were unveiled, he tried to make his movement appear a lot more significant than in reality, often colored by lies. This made an about-turn in his approach to Hungarians and to politics in overall. Beside of the execution of the conspiracy leaders, he wrote a memorandum about his newly formed beliefs. This piece of act, fueled by passion now argued for the total control of the Kingdom of Hungary. After his tragic death on the 12th of July 1795, nobody could lead the unfolding absolutist monarchy of Francis I. to a convenient path. The about-turn of Alexander Leopold in the hungarian politics, and in his life is the topic of my presentation.
