The most magnificent chapter of the Hungarian military history during the 19th century is the War of Independence of 1848-49. Despite the defeat, the country achieved great results like the birth of the Hungarian Defence Forces, the manoeuvres of Artúr Görgei during winter and summer, the Spring Campaign, or the liberation of Transylvania. János Czetz, a well qualified military scientist, the youngest general of the War of Independence was one of the most talented officers in the latter. He had a key role in the victories of Józef Bem’s Transylvanian army. Czetz was a very serene, judicious and wise chief of staff next to the adventurous Polish general, but they were a fantastic duo together. They defeated the imperial Austrian and Russian army in Transylvania in less than four months too. Czetz was the temporary commander-in-chief of this army as well, from the end of November to the beginning of December and from the middle of April to the beginning of June. After the War of Independence, Czetz became one of the most important leaders of the Hungarian military emigration and later he was a colonel in the Argentinian army as well. His far-reaching career would deserve more attention from prosperity. The 200th anniversary of his birth would be a convenient opportunity to carry out this. There are only a few essays and books about Czetz’s career and these twenty-, or thirty-year-old works focus on his life in the emigration or they are not only about Czetz’s military career but also the generalship and military organization of 1848-49. The aim of this essay is to review Czetz’s military career during the War of Independence. The author used the works of great military historians like Tamás Csikány, Róbert Hermann, Gyula Kedves, Endre Kovács, or Attila Süli and used shorter publications, memoirs that can shed more light on János Czetz’s activity in Transylvania and they may provide answers to unexplored questions, too, such as: When did the appointment arrive at Csucsa that named Czetz as a temporary commander-in-chief of Transylvania and Partium?
