Abstract
This study explores the early years of the organization of the Church in Hungary, and the sources available on this topic. Three main factors affecting the development of church organization in Hungary can be identified — the early Byzantine influence, followed by that of the German Empire and finally the influence of Rome. Even though Byzantium was undeniably the earliest force to shape Hungarian church organization, for various political reasons the Hungarians would become a part of Western Latin Christendom , as is clearly borne out by the Kievan Chronicles. The territorial configuration of Hungarian Episcopal sees, particularly in the eastern part of the Carpathian basin, is quite distinctive. A pattern of "fanning out" is discernible, in which a centre of church governance was located at one end of the region it served, which we may speculate was the most easily defended or densely populated extremity. Similar approaches to secular regional organization can also be traced, such as in the Transylvanian voivodeship (province), The Croatian-Dalmatian province and the Macsó province, where against a politically and economically background the integration of new territories begins with a similar type of fanning out. While the development of Episcopal sees and the formation of secular administrative units show considerable divergence in the first century of the Hungarian state, it can clearly be seen that from the reigns of Saint Ladislaus I and King Coloman onwards a harmonious co-operation between Church and secular authorities developed in dealing with problems of territorial administration.
