Abstract
Due to the increasing energy demands a so-called „nuclear renaissance” has started in the past years, during which a growing number of states expressed their need for the peaceful development of nuclear energy. For these developments, equipment and facilities are needed, thus the volume of nuclear trade has also increased in the international community. However, during the development of nuclear energy, states produce large amounts of nuclear material that can also be used to create nuclear weapons. This way nuclear trade can contribute to nuclear proliferation, therefore the international regulation of this area is of great importance. The aim of this study is to examine the possibilities states have to acquire nuclear weapons through their nuclear exports and imports and to see if these transactions pose a real threat to the international community. The study also addresses the shortcomings of international nuclear export regulations and the role of non-state actors in nuclear trade briefly.
