Abstract
On June 23, 2016 the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. The EU referendum in the UK has been seriously affected the European integration and intesified the political disagreements between the Member States; federalism versus strong nation states. The principle of European unity is supported by both parties however its content and future are considered differently. The Bratislava Summit of the 27 Heads of State and Government was convened to kick start a process of identifying what direction the European Union will take. The study focuses on the overview of stages and their results of the reform process – including Brexit which ‘launched’ the whole process, the tentative timelines of the Bratislava Summit designed to guide the Union, the outcomes of the October and December European Council, the informal meeting of the EU heads of state or government in Malta and the March 2017 celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Rome Treaties – and tries to reflect whether the completion of the debate on the future of the EU would be realistic in March 2017. The paper also notes how the Western European countries are preparing for the finalization of the process and how the V4 would like to continue the debate based on the principles approved by the Rome Summit. The 60th anniversary of the Rome Treaties provides the opportunity not only to overview the achievements of the European integration but to define the possible way of EU in the future. March 2017 puts big pressure on the EU27; they must counter sixty years but especially the last ten and to face with the situation that the withdrawal of the UK from the EU will officially start.
