Since the broadcasting became nationwide, the states had to face different problems with the regulation of the new types of media. It all started with the press, then continued with the radio and for a long time it stopped by the television. The essay focuses on the problems concerning with the television programmes broadcasted abroad and the development of the technology. The European Union had to deal with the Janus face of the media since it has both a cultural and a commercial sphere. The hardest duty was to line the borders of the authority of the European Union and the member states to regulate. In the meanwhile, the member states had to bear the consequences of the progression of the broadcasting services, thus the existence of the public service media had been questioned. This is still the sphere of the member states however the commercial media takes away several sections of their public service topics. The Hungarian public service media is – just like the Treaty of Rome – turned 70 this year. Since the birth of the Hungarian system determined its future it had to be showed how the relation between the state and the media changed as the Iron Curtain fell down and the commercial media took its place on the market. By the end there has to be the picture of the new media and the challenge of the new types of commercials and contents. The dangers are related to intellectual property, protection of children and consumers. They are the streaming sites, piracy, new type of crimes and the native advertising.
