Abstract
The aim of this study to present the classification aspects of the Hungarian cultural institutions according to the (legal) person of operator or the general forms of cultural institutions by jurisdiction. After the Fall of Communism in 1989-1990, the State remained the operator of the largest Hungarian cultural institutions, such as the national museums and the Hungarian National Archives. However the local governments have become the operators of the local libraries, theatres and the community centres. Besides, NGOs and private firms have tended to fund artistic institutions, mainly troupes, orchestras and dance companies. The cultural institutions, which have to carry out administrative tasks, can operate only as budgetary agencies (e.g. archeological duties of the museums). In contrast, the cultural institutions, which have large amount of own income (e.g. theatres, concert halls), tend to operates as non-profit Limited Companies (Ltd.).
