Despite the fact that today more than 100 million people work in a land different from their own, the international protection of migrant workers is much less developed than international trade law. This contradiction of our globalizing age between the free flow of goods, services and capital on the one hand, and the restrictions in the way of the free movement of people on the other, may be resolved by legislation adopted by regional organizations. This article aims to give an overview of measures protecting the rights of migrant workers in regional organizations outside Europe. It looks at both organizations aimed at economic integration, and organizations with the goal of protecting human rights. The findings of my research can be considered sad, as except for the Americas — where both regional human rights organizations (the OAS) and regional economic communities (MERCOSUR, Andean) deal with the problem — the existing instruments usually remain mere political declarations, and plans for the future are also quite half hearted. Nevertheless it is important to learn about these instruments, as a comparative view might help better understand our European system, which of course is much more developed than the instruments of other continents, but it is still far from perfect, and for example the different philosophy behind the African regulations might give fresh impetus for future European law making.
