As a consequence of the parliamentary elections, which were held on 10th November 2019, the restructuring of the party system in Spain was further continued. The two-party system characterised by the dominance of Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) and the People’s Party (PP) ceased to exist and new political forces emerged in the political arena. According to the concept of Giovanni Sartori the party system of Spain is quite similar to “extreme” pluralism. In compliance with the results of the elections, neither the right-wing nor the left-wing political parties succeeded obtaining absolute majority (176 mandates). The PSOE gained together with the radical political party, Unidas Podemos 155 mandates, while PP, Ciudadanos and Vox acquired only 150. The parliamentary elections showed clearly that the majority of Spanish electors completely disappointed the traditional political forces and elite. The emergence of Vox and its excellent results (more than 2,4 million votes casted) and the shrinking support of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party clearly show the decreasing trust of Spanish citizens into their traditional political elite and leadership. On 7th January 2020, Pedro Sánchez was voted back in to power as Prime minister by the Congress at the second round of investiture. This put an end of the deadlock, which had lasted more than one and a half years since the beginning of 2019.
