Abstract
The ongoing power shift from the Euro-Atlantic area to Asia, especially to China, is one of the most important characteristics of the transforming world order. This process is also associated with strong trade and investment relationship between the parties. Bilateral trade is interfered by the unfair trading practices of Chinese companies, therefore, in response the EU applies a series of trade defense measures. However, it must be mentioned that these instruments of EU are country neutral and are not targeting only China. In many cases, there is a legitimate demand from the European integration to tackle the subsidies and unfair competition practices of third country enterprises. The paper analyses the geoeconomic significance of the duties imposed by the EU, mainly on raw materials. The fact that the geoeconomic rivalry and protectionism are returning on the stage of international trade relations gives further relevance to the topic. Present work can be classified as a business geoeconomical analyses within the rapidly expanding geoeconomical scientific literature. Between November 2014 and December 2018, the EU initiated a total of 170 trade defense investigations, and in 95 cases duties were imposed. Nonetheless, it can be concluded, that at the same period, most duties introduced by EU were imposed against China. Among these measures several sectors are concerned within many have great importance to European industrial production, such as iron and steel, mechanical engineering, electronics and chemical industry.
