Abstract

The men of the ancient word — especially the philosophers — engaged themselves in thinking about the question of violence, power and rights. Studying ancient historians can reveal interesting ideas about their reading of power (arché, dynamis). This paper takes, for example, Herodotus in a relation to the Greek-Persian war, and Thucydides in a relation to the rivalling Greek cities, especially the leaders: Athens and Sparta. The interpretation of power (potestas, imperium) had an important function in the policy of ancient Rome, which was inspired to create a World Empire. The Greek historian, Polybius' work also reflects the Roman special reading of power.
