Abstract
Starting from the criticism of epistemic two-dimensionalism on the historic-causal theory of reference developed by Kripke and extended by Putnam, the study claims that the semantic profile of fictional names such as `Effi Briest' or `Geert von Innstetten' is a dual one. The meaning of a fictional name has a hidden indexical as well as a hidden descriptive aspect. As hidden indexical, the fictional name refers in every possible world rigidly to the same entity, inhabiting a centered world which is situated in the epistemic space of possibility. As hidden description it refers to an entity which can be determined a priori, by a canonical description of this epistemic possible world. Due to the inaccessibility of the world and its canonical description, a fictional name can only be interpreted by the completeness-assumption of the description of the fictional world (the literary discourse itself), that is, through descriptions.
