This study focuses on the promising idea of developing strategic reasoning components in the school as early as during the elementary school years. In this analysis we examine (I) the nature and importance of strategic reasoning, (2) the importance of strategic reasoning in the learning and development of basic cognitive skills like arithmetic and reading skills, (3) some empirical results from the field of mathematics and reading, (4) the results of our own training programs that aimed to improve students' strategic reasoning as well as their overall achievement in mathematics and reading. Strategic reasoning can be defined as a set of beliefs about reasoning, and the planning, monitoring and evaluation components of reasoning. The literature often uses the tenn "metacognition" to describe these higher level constituents of human thinking. Strategic reasoning plays an important role in the development of basic arithmetic and reading skills. It has been revealed that even kindergarten children use their own planning and monitoring strategies when solving simple addition and subtraction problems. There are well-documented results about mathematical word problems that revealed the lack of appropriate and flexible problem solving strategies. There is a growing body of evidence about the possibility and importance of improving students' mathematical problem solving strategies and reading comprehension by way of developing reasoning strategies. Our own investigations have proven the effectiveness of implementing metacognition-based training programs in the fields of mathematics and reading. Our development training programs addressed both the questions of classroom teaching methods and the problem of selecting appropriate tasks for 4`h grade students.
