Abstract
The region of the Middle East (Egypt) started to feature prominently in the socialist countries' foreign policy from the end of the 50'. In this article I try to give a survey of these changing attitudes towards this area. The first chapter focuses on the USSR's interests as a superpower. I briefly summarize the antagonism of Moscow's situation. The necessity of choosing between the political or military way of solution can give us a reason for the dualistic policy of this superpower and also explains Moscow's support for the general peace process, which never had come to an end in the discussed period. The conflict in the Middle East with its complexity, namely the geopolitical, economic, religious and strategic components, furthermore their strong relation to each other, was a serious obstacle in the way of agreeing on the final settlement. Related to this connection the Palestine question is emphasized, not as itself, but mainly as an object of the relationship of the socialist countries and Egypt. This research is based partly on diplomatic documents from the National Archives of Hungary that have reference to Egypt and Palestine.
