Abstract

The European language policy goals and expectations of the labour market make it inevitable for Hungary that all citizens become speakers of two foreign languages. These priorities are reflected in the developmental objectives of the Hungarian National Core Curriculum. The present research therefore examined the level of foreign language knowledge at the end of primary and secondary school, as well as mapped the factors affecting this level and, more specifically, estimated the influence of students' cognitive abilities and affective characteristics. To these ends, the English reading comprehension of approximately 3000 students (grades 8 and I2) was assessed in 2007. In the present study data were subjected to cross-sectional analyses in which students' performances on the English reading tests were investigated as functions of school-related variables. The results show student reading performances distributed along a rather wide scale. Multiple regression analyses with English reading performances as dependent variables show inductive reasoning as the strongest influence on them among cognitive abilities; however, the effects of complex problem solving skills are also noteworthy. Maternal education explains a smaller ratio of the variance than expected. The highest explained variance usually belongs to the grade received in English. The findings may inform tasksetting in educational policy.
