Abstract

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the European architecture was dominated by two prevailing stylistic trends: eclecticism bearing the marks of historicism, and the unconventional Art Nouveau. The architectural history of the historic Vojvodina during the 19-20th centuries was greatly inspired by academic eclecticism and the revolutionary Art Nouveau. The traditional Hungarian version, made famous by Ödön Lechner (1845–1914) and his followers, which uses plant-based decorative elements borrowed from folk art, is the most common in Art Nouveau architecure of Vojvodina. The period of dualism can be considered the most advanced phase in the history of Kanjiža. After the Astro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, the economic and social life of the town livened. The house of the Bata family in Kanjiža. Built in the second half of the 19th century is reminiscent of the archictural traditions of the growing local merchant class.
