Abstract
An epidemic of cholera swept through Hungary between 1872 and 1874. The dangerous, often fatal disease reached the town of Szentes in late May 1873 and killed nearly a thousand people by the end of September. In my study, I will show the role played by the local press, which had started shortly before, in the fight against the epidemic. It also gives some insights into the social life of Szentes at the time.
