Abstract
This study examines a unique formation in the Hungarian political system, the Left Centre party, as well as the interesting relationship of its leaders, Kálmán Tisza and Kálmán Ghyczy. After discussing the party’s origins, foundation, and its position in the political landscape, the inner workings, subfactions, and the various stages of the Left Centre’s political history will be detailed. Following this, the two party leaders are introduced, and not only their respective roles in the party, but their personal character, motivations, and the nature of their cooperation are also discussed. Our aim is to investigate the various aspects and changes in their relationship in light of the historical events of the time, and to present the political, personal and psychological factors that affected the development of this relationship. Another important question is how the relationship of the two leaders and the nature of their cooperation influenced the party and its changing goals, and how it lead to the great party merger of 1875, that was not only the end of the nine year history of the Left Centre that formally started in 1866, but also the beginning of a new chapter in the political life of the Dual Monarchy that started with the Austro-Hungarian Compromise.
