Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to verify the presence, in Vico, of the nexus between wonder, novelty and pleasure that lies at the origins of modern aesthetics and finds its first, accomplished, formulation in Breitinger’s theory of the «marvelous (das Wunderbare)” : poetological theory maturing in the context of a rethinking of the institutions of ancient rhetoric. Now, an interweaving of similar connections can also be found in Vico, who, reflecting on acute sayings and, in particular, metaphor, sees them as evocative devices that, by attracting the reader’s re-creative imagination, promote in the reader an acquisition of knowledge combined with pleasure.
