Abstract

The lies of Max Nordau and Luigi Pirandello. For the history of a reception The Hungarian-born Max Nordau was one of the best-known medical philosopherphilosophers of the 19th century, who had an extraordinary influence on the thinking of his time. His first work of criticism of civilisation, which was widely read throughout Europe, was Conventionelle Lügen der Kulturmenschheit (Konvencionális hazugságok modern kultúréletünkben), which was translated into almost all European languages. It also reached the young Luigi Pirandello, albeit indirectly at first, through the report of his then teacher, the enthusiastic Nordau fan Professor Andrea Lo Forte-Randi. A few years later, however, Pirandello wrote La menzogna del sentimento nell'arte [Az érzelem hazugsága a művészetben], in which some of the ideas rightly suggest a more thorough knowledge of Nordau's work. The aim of this paper is to compare analytically these two works on lying and to show the influence of Nordau's theory on Pirandello's worldview and his developing poetics.
