Abstract
During the Risorgimento, treatises were a popular method among intellectuals to discuss the question of creating the national Italian identity. The aim of this study is to analyse Giacomo Leopardi’s treatise Discorso sopra lo stato presente dei costumi degl’Italiani (1824- 1826, published in 1906) from the perspective of how he saw the morality of Italians in the early 19th century. In his polemical work, Leopardi rejects Madame De Staël’s opinion that Italians have corrupt morals. Although he finds the French critic’s words unjust, he has to recognise that Italians cannot become a united nation due to their alienation from Nature and loss of illusions: society is now decayed. Leopardi’s pessimism leads him to present the Italian people in a negative, almost cynical manner, essentially highlighting their faults.
