Abstract

The humanity’s relation to itself and to the animal changes when it looks into the eyes of the animal and sees a being whose otherness cannot be fully understood. At the same time, it can also be an opportunity for humanity to engage in a process of self-reflection and to reflect on its position in the world. The event of the hunt can offer an occasion for this. The interpretations and analyses in this study focus on the relationship between humanity and animality, and my aim is to show how the way in which man defines himself changes depending on the vision-sightviewpoint. Through the exploration of literary works chosen from the theme of hunting – William Wordsworth: Hart-Leap Well (1800), Alfred de Vigny: The Death of the Wolf (1843/1864), Péter Závada: Hunting (2017) – I will try to demonstrate how hunting can be read in literature according to the aforementioned aspects. The theoretical background for the analyses is provided by the ideas of Jacques Derrida, John Berger and José Ortega y Gasset, among others. The question is: what is the ethics of the gaze?
