Abstract

The subject of my thesis is The Leaotung Man’s Tale, by Mór Jókai. Relatively little scholarly work has been done on this late text by the author, which is one of the reasons why I consider it important to study it. My basic assumption is that Jókai’s work is based on the distance and isolation of the continent, which is the basis for the unique encounter of oriental influence and fairy-tale elements in his work. The aim of my research is to analyse the text from the point of view of Orientalism, which played an important role in the period. The questions arise: what was the image of China in people’s minds at the time? In what proportion did it contain real or fictional elements? Placed in a nineteenth-century context, I examine Oriental influences on the basis of contemporary newspaper articles.
