Abstract
Based on a few religious textbooks used by Jewish youth in Hungary, this study outlines the loyalty image "suggested" to the youth of the Neolog Jewish community at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It also traces the developmental line, changes, and continuities observed in these educational materials. The first textbook analyzed, written by Nátán Halász, uses biblical and Mishnah quotations to exemplify and advise the youth on the proper path to follow. Similarly, Sámuel Krausz, using biblical and Talmudic quotations, provides guidance and addresses the concept of "patriotism." Béla Bernstein offers advice to the youth of his time through the interpretation of the Fifth Commandment, implicitly addressing Zionism without mentioning it directly. At the end of his book, Manó Havas succinctly summarizes the essential message of the other religious textbooks: "It is our religious duty to love the homeland, the country in which we live, whose laws protect us." From the opening of the Budapest National Rabbinical Training Institute (Landesrabbinerschule) until 1926, I review the "ceremonies" held there that reflect a certain image of loyalty. I compare these with several homilies by Immánuel Löw, who represented the Neolog Jewish community as a member of the upper house of the Hungarian Parliament between 1927 and 1940. Löw's homilies may contribute to outlining a possibly different image of loyalty.
