Absztrakt (kivonat)

The following paper, in two continuous formats, discusses the nuclear activity of the Democratic People‟s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the challenges it poses to international peace and security from an international law and international relations point of reference. The first part is concerned with the international law perspective of the paper. After an introductory passage, the theoretical background of nuclear development is introduced, including concepts such as nuclear threat, nuclear states and non-nuclear states, the security dilemma, nuclear taboo. Furthermore, the reasons behind the urge of the DPRK to develop its very own nuclear arsenal, constantly improving that despite international condemnation, are explored. The second part elaborates on the consequences that nuclearization of the DPRK and its non-compliance with agreements have regarding international relations and the way diplomatic relations took shape as a result of recurring sanctions from the international community and the DPRK‟s repetitive violations of agreements and treaties. The chapter encompasses the events concerning the relationship between the DPRK and the parties on the international level, i.e. the United States, and due to its geographical location, on the regional level with the Republic of Korea, Japan, People‟s Republic of China and the Russian Federation. Conclusively, this part aims to suggest that despite threatening attitude, efforts are still made to normalize deteriorated diplomatic relations.
